Pune civic authority finally commence issuing property tax bills

The local governing authority of Pune City recent commenced the distribution of property tax invoices, after a delay of one and a half months. Online access to the bills has been made possible as well. By visiting the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) website, individuals who own property can obtain access to it.

According to authorities from the PMC, the computation of bills was redone subsequent to the announcement of a 40 percent tax reduction for properties occupied by their owners. There are several methods by which taxpayers can submit their payments. Ajit Deshmukh, head of the property tax department of PMC, mentioned that there are various payment methods for taxes, including online payment gateways and in-person submission at civic offices.

As per PMC statistics, approximately 7.68 lakh invoices had been submitted via the internet last week. Printing has commenced, and the mailing process began on May 19. Around 4 lakh bills are yet to be generated and disbursed, which will take place until May 31.

According to the state's directive, properties that were registered after 2019 but did not receive the advantage of this reduction will undergo evaluation. The discount will be applicable starting April 1st of the current year.

In 2019, the 40 percent taxation plan was terminated, and the PMC initiated the dissemination of bills featuring elevated taxes. The decision to retrieve past dues from property holders resulted in protests. The PMC has enlisted the assistance of post offices to distribute property tax invoices after discontinuing the services of private companies. The distribution process is estimated to incur an expenditure of approximately Rs 50 lakh by the PMC.

The PMC has urged individuals who own residential properties registered after 2019 and are paying complete taxes to submit the necessary documentation to verify their occupancy in order to benefit from the 40 percent discount. In the event that the property owner proves that their residential property registered after 2019 is being self-occupied, any extra tax paid since 2019 will be balanced out against their property tax for the next four years.

The municipality of Pune has prolonged the deadline for payment of property taxes for citizens who are eligible for reduced rates. Initially, the deadline for receiving tax payment discounts was set for May 30, 2023; however, it has now been extended to June 30, 2023.

Since 1950, PMC has been actively providing services and collecting property tax, which is its secondary means of generating revenue after Octroi. The assessment of a property's value and the corresponding taxation is conducted by either the PMC or the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in Pune, dependent on the property's location.
