Haryana Assembly Speaker, Gian Chand Gupta, has unveiled a plan aimed at providing assistance to individuals
residing in slums and shanties. The proposal, which involves granting each family a 1 marla plot or flat, is currently
awaiting approval from the Haryana chief minister.
To discuss the details of this initiative, Speaker Gupta organized a meeting at the MLA hostel with high-ranking
officials from the Haryana government, including D S Dhesi, the chief principal secretary to the chief minister, and
Ajit Balaji Joshi, the chief administrator of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA).
During the meeting, a comprehensive and viable strategy for rehabilitating the slum dwellers was deliberated upon.
After considering various approaches, the decision to eradicate the slums and allocate 1 marla plots to each family was
finalized. Speaker Gupta informed that a meeting with Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar would soon be arranged to
seek his approval for the proposed plan.
Furthermore, the meeting also explored the possibility of extending the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (a
housing scheme) to the deserving individuals. On a different note, the legislative assembly's Speaker expressed
concern about the continuous emergence of numerous slums in the city. In response, the district administration,
HUDA, and Municipal Corporation (MC) officials were instructed to take strict measures to address this issue.
Speaker Gupta highlighted the unfulfilled promises made by previous governments to resolve the problems faced by
slum dwellers in areas such as Indira Colony, Rajiv Colony, and Kharak Mangoli in Panchkula. He pointed out that
despite the slum dwellers contributing money on two occasions with the expectation of receiving houses or flats, no
progress had been made. As a result, the concerned officials were directed to refund the money with interest.
Additionally, Gupta conducted a review of the existing rehabilitation schemes in the city and conveyed the grievances
expressed by the residents regarding the inadequate maintenance of Ashiana flats. Consequently, he instructed the
officials to address these maintenance issues promptly.
In light of the Supreme Court's decision, Speaker Gupta expressed his disappointment with the persisting problem of
illegal encroachments in the city. He urged the MC and HUDA officials to swiftly remove these unauthorized
encroachments.
The Haryana Assembly Speaker's announcement signifies the government's commitment to improving the living
conditions of slum dwellers by providing them with land or housing. With the proposed plan awaiting approval, it is
hoped that this initiative will offer a promising solution to the challenges faced by the slum dwellers in Haryana.
