Applications for fire mitigation certificates off to slow start in Hyderabad

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) enforcement vigilance and disaster management (EVDM)
wing recently implemented a new requirement for commercial establishments to obtain fire mitigation certificates.
Unfortunately, many owners have responded poorly to this new rule due to a lack of awareness.
The introduction of fire mitigation certificates is a direct response to a series of fire accidents that have occurred in
Hyderabad, including incidents at the Swapnalok Complex and Deccan Knitwear that resulted in the loss of nine lives
this year. Additionally, the absence of a comprehensive fire safety policy for buildings less than 15 meters in height
has contributed to these incidents.
In a recent statement, the EVDM highlighted several potential causes for these fire accidents. They identified the
presence of "red category buildings" in busy residential areas, negligence on the part of owners in implementing fire
safety measures, outdated electrical installations, violations of occupancy norms, misuse of cellars for commercial
purposes, and malfunctioning fire safety systems as key factors.
To streamline the process of obtaining fire safety mitigation certificates, the EVDM has launched a dedicated website,
firesafety.ghmc.gov.in. This website serves as a platform for citizens to apply for the necessary certificates.
In order to be eligible for these certificates, establishments must have fire safety installations that adhere to the
guidelines outlined in the National Building Code of 2016. Specifically, buildings with a minimum height of nine
meters or more and a floor area exceeding 500 square meters, as well as incidental assembly structures like function
halls with an area of over 300 square meters, must have an external staircase with a width of 1.5 meters.
By implementing these fire mitigation certificates, the GHMC aims to enhance the safety of commercial
establishments and protect the lives and properties of Hyderabad residents. It is crucial for owners to familiarize
themselves with the new requirement and take immediate steps to comply with the fire safety regulations. The EVDM
is committed to raising awareness about this initiative and encourages all eligible establishments to submit their
applications for fire mitigation certificates through the dedicated website.
Ultimately, the effective implementation of fire safety measures, such as acquiring the necessary certificates and
ensuring compliance with the National Building Code guidelines, will contribute to a safer environment for both
business owners and the community as a whole. It is essential for all stakeholders to prioritize fire safety and actively
participate in efforts to prevent future fire accidents in Hyderabad.
