Earlier this month, the Quelossim village panchayat decided to update the house tax rate, which has not been changed for over 25 years. The revision was approved smoothly during the gram sabha gathering, with no signs of hostility. The most recent amendment was made back in 1996.
According to the Quelossim sarpanch, Francisco Figueredo, houses made of mud that have been in existence since 1996 will be charged Rs 100 annually. On the other hand, houses constructed with cement, bricks, stones, or Mangalore tiles will be charged Rs 200 annually. Houses constructed with slabs made of reinforced cement concrete are obligated to bear a fee of Rs 5 for every square metre. Individuals requesting occupancy certificates from the panchayat will be required to remit a fee of Rs 8 for every square metre.
The discussion during the meeting also revolved around the management of waste within the area under the jurisdiction of the panchayat. The members have decided to eliminate the problem of garbage in the panchayat. Figueredo stated that the contractor in question has received instructions to clear the litter from uncovered areas.
Figueredo stated that a panel on garbage has been formed by the panchayat to monitor the garbage problem at regular intervals.
A Gram Sabha comprises all the grown-ups who dwell in the region under the jurisdiction of a Panchayat. The Gram Panchayat is a body elected by all the members of a Gram Sabha. The government appoints the secretary rather than electing them to their position. The Gram Sabha plays a pivotal role in the development of the Panchayati Raj system and the improvement of villages. The Gram Sabha forum serves as a platform for people to engage in discussions concerning the management and progress of their locality, as well as devise appropriate village-specific strategies.
The Sarpanch, serving as the head of the Panchayat, is elected by the members of the Gram Sabha. The Gram Panchayat is composed of the village Panchs and Sarpanch. The key responsibilities of the Gram Panchayat involve managing and overseeing the upkeep and creation of necessary amenities such as water resources, roadways, sewage systems, educational facilities, and communal assets, gather and impose taxes at the local level and implement governmental initiatives regarding job opportunities.
