Safety concerns raised after ceiling plaster falls in Vinayak Residency apartments

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation has sent a notice to the contractor of a housing scheme in Sayajipura area. The plaster of the ceiling in an apartment in the Vinayak Residency fell in the room while three people narrowly escaped from injury. This led to other complaints from other residents in the apartments to be brought in the limelight. A notice was issued to the contractor who had worked on the project after the previous contractor could not complete the work. Vinayak Residency apartments was constructed for the middle-income group beneficiaries under the Mukhyamantri Gruh Yojana (MGY) Housing Scheme.

The family told the media that they had moved into the apartment just six months ago and had noticed cracks in the ceilings plaster in two rooms of the house. They had heard a sound in the night and got alert. The elderly bed-ridden lady had to be covered to save her from any injury if the ceiling cracked and fell. Since they were alert and aware of the cracks and had heard the sound before the plaster fell off they had a narrow escape else it could have led to major injury or even death.

This incident led to highlighting other issues in the scheme which was constructed in 2017. A Letter was sent to the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) Commissioner stating that the work in the housing scheme was incomplete. A community hall, rainwater harvesting system had not been provided and only one lift was provided instead of two.

A notice was issued to the contractor who had constructed the scheme. The first contractor could not complete the project and so a second contractor had taken over. The contractor was asked to complete all the pending work at the earliest looking at the safety of the residents of the apartment. A team of officials would be sent to the apartment to look into the matter and conduct a detailed survey.
