Police arrests realty firm director in Mumbai for fraud

Earlier this week, Mrs Sona Bansal, a director of a Delhi based real estate firm was arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police in Mumbai on charges of allegedly duping investors. A reward of Rs 50,000/- had been put out for those who could aid the police in her arrest. Mrs Bansal and her husband are wanted for several high-profile white collar crimes including the ‘Gurgaon-Manesar Industrial Model Township Land Grab Scheme’.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated a money laundering investigation after an FIR was lodged in Manesar police station against them. The FIR was lodged as a result of an investigation led by the Anti-Corruption Bureau, and Central Bureau of Investigation. The ED, through its probe, discovered the builder’s entities grabbed land from farmers and land holders at nominal rates by instilling in them the fear of acquisition of their land.

The Gurgaon-Manesar Industrial Model Township Land Grab Scheme was a controversial land acquisition and development project in the Gurgaon and Manesar regions of the Indian state of Haryana. The project involved the acquisition of large portions of agricultural land from farmers by the government, with the goal of developing it into an industrial and residential area. The project faced opposition from farmers and activists, who claimed that the land was being acquired unfairly and at below-market prices, and that the compensation offered to displaced farmers was inadequate. The controversy surrounding the project led to protests and legal challenges, and the issue remains a contentious one in the region.
