EWS Housing Program to be launched by GMADA

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has announced it intends to release bids for the EWS housing programme next month and launch a call for applications for a 5,000-unit building. The housing programme for the economically weaker sections (EWS) is set to launch in February, seven months after the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) finalised the layout design for the construction of 5,000 apartments in July 2022. The administration will begin soliciting applications for the apartments as well as floating tenders for construction next month.

According to the plan, the apartments will be built on a total of 54 acres spread over GMADA's four townships: Aerocity (13.49 acres), IT City (17.48 acres), Eco City-1 (3.6 acres) and Eco City-2 (20.17 acres). The flats will cost roughly Rs 8.5 lakh each will be built on a 30 square metre plot and come with a living room, a bedroom, a kitchen, and a bathroom. They will be built by GMADA utilising the most advanced brick less technology and banks will provide financing at reasonable monthly instalment rates. To ensure comfortable living the apartment buildings will be built in sized-appropriate clusters near social infrastructure including schools, community centres and pharmacies.

Punjab housing and urban development minister Aman Arora recently met with GMADA officers and gave them instructions to speed up the building of homes for the underprivileged. The project is a component of the Punjab government's EWS housing strategy which was updated and published in February 2021.

Qualified applicants would need to provide documentation of their Punjabi birth or 10-year residency. The family's combined annual income shouldn't be more than Rs 3 lakh as occasionally updated by the central or Punjabi governments. A freehold or leasehold residential land or dwelling unit in Punjab or Chandigarh must not already be owned by the applicant, their spouse, or a minor kid. The qualifying requirements for applicants must be self-certified.
