Earlier this month, the C Ward of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) lifted the stop-work notice issued against the Bhendi Bazar redevelopment project, allowing work to restart after a hiatus of over two months. The notice was first issued on the behest of deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis who requested an investigation into reports that the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust, which is carrying out the project, had altered the original designs, removed certain roads and changed the widths of certain highways and roadways. The same complaints were investigated in December 2021 by then acting deputy speak Narhari Zirwal, who had given the Trust a clean chit.
The 4,000 crore Bhendi Bazaar Cluster Redevelopment Project, spread across 16.5 acres of prime land in the heart of the city, has once again restarted thanks to the BMC department removing the stop-work notice issued over two months ago. The project was stalled on the behest of deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis who directed the BMC to create a team to investigate the complaints filed. Deputy chief engineer Sunil Rathod was the chairman of the BMC's investigating committee. The construction site was visited, and the documents were examined to cross verify claims that the Trust had altered plans by decreasing road and highway widths and modifying original designs.
The cluster redevelopment's layout was initially published in 2015. It was modified several times in the subsequent years and finally in 2021 approval was given for a final layout that included nine sections. Initially only the rehabilitation component has been given construction permission. According to the on-site inspection report, the work is being carried out in accordance with the beginning certificate issued by the BMC. The project proponent has provided certificates of quality and structural stability as well as the number of tenants who are eligible for certification by the Mumbai Repair and Reconstruction Board.
The Bhendi Bazaar project is by far the largest in the city and the cluster redevelopment programme was created in 2009. Only a small number of projects have been finished so far because of this programme, which aims to provide citizens with free housing while also improving the city's civic infrastructure.
