BDD chawal homes to be ready by December 2024

Earlier this week, the CEO and vice-president of the Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA) announced that six buildings of 40-storeys each will be ready to be occupied by December 2024. These buildings are a part of the massive redevelopment project of BDD Chawal undertaken by the state government along with local governing bodies such as MHADA and SRA as well as private builders. The tenants eligible for homes in these six buildings will be the first to move into their new 500square feet of living space. The entire chawal is said to have over 9,500 tenants eligible for housing.

This ambitious redevelopment project of BDD Chawal was first proposed by the Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP-Shiv Sena government. In 2022, on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, the housing department introduced a housing scheme for police staff residing in BDD Chawls. Through the scheme they could purchase 500sqft flats for a sum of Rs 15 lacs. In December 2022, the civic bodies offered residents of the chawal the option of availing a monthly rental compensation of Rs 25,000/- instead of opting for a transit home while the chawls are being redeveloped. As part of the redevelopment Phase 1 almost 4,400 families were asked to vacate their homes whereas there were only 3,100 transit homes to accommodate them interim. Therefore, a need to create an alternative option was necessary.
