Government to set up 35 Multi-Modal Logistics Parks across the country

The Central Government is gearing up to develop over 35 Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLP) in coming years, in an effort to streamline and facilitate intermodal transportation of goods across the country via road, water and inland waterways. Of the 35 parks to be established, the one in Chennai is already under development. It will be followed by parks in Indore, Nagpur, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Pune and Anantapur. The development of the latter will commence by the end of the next fiscal year. The development of MMLP is part of the Bharatmala Pariyojna program of 2017.

The Government of India has formerly decided to set up around 35 Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLP) across the nation at a total capital cost of INR 50000 crore. Work has already begun for the development of one such park in Chennai, the tender for which was awarded to Reliance Industries (RIL). Three more parks are to follow in the next fiscal year at a combined investment of close to Rs 2300 crore. The biggest of these will be in Bangalore, spread over an area of 400 acres, being developed at a cost of INR 936 crore. Two more parks will be developed at Indore and Nagpur with an investment of Rs 758 crore and Rs 600 crore respectively. The bidding for the aforementioned projects will close by January of 2023. A notice was issued on 15 December 2022 cancelling the bid process for the Bangalore MMLP. However, a new tender was floated shortly after.

The project is being headed by The National Highways Logistics Management Ltd, a subsidiary of The National Highways Authority of India. Of the 35 projects in the pipeline,15 will be awarded in the next three years, amongst which contracts for 4 parks, namely in Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Pune and Anantapur are set to be handed over by the end of the current fiscal year.

Multi Modal Logistics Parks, are poised to be state of the art large scale warehousing facilities for different types of commodities, to become a one stop solution for all services related to cargo movement like warehousing, customs clearance, parking, and maintenance of freight trucks etc.
