Walt Disney set to construct affordable housing homes in Florida

The Michaels Organisation has been commissioned by Disney to create an affordable housing project containing 1,300 units on an 80-acre land parcel which is a part of Disney World’s Land. The project will be situated close to the park, near schools and shopping centres. Only those individuals who fall within a certain income bracket will be able to apply. The developed will be privately financed.

The company hopes this new initiative will help ease the looming housing crisis in the state while creating new jobs in Central Florida via construction and operational activities needed for the project. Disney will collaborate with The Michael’s Organisation on construction and design. A detailed plan for the project is scheduled to be ready by 2023. Community development has long been a cause deal to Walt Disney’s heart. He spearheaded a visionary project called the ‘Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow’ (EPCOT) which was to become a developed and planned city that could become the centre for American enterprise and urban living. However, after his death in 1966 the project was abandoned on account of a lack of viability.

Several other companies in the United States are advocating engagement with communities to support regional growth. Handel Architects has committed to including at least 30 percent of minority and women-owned businesses embedded in LA for the construction of Angels Landing, the third tallest tower in Downtown Los Angeles. Similarly, the contractor of the Lucas Museum has set the goal for local hiring and increasing the pipeline for subcontracting with women-owned businesses, minorities, and veterans.
